About Church Sv. Georgi

Reviewed by Tony Denesa·Updated:

The Church of "St George" stands in Berkovitsa, a picturesque little town at the foot of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina) in north-western Bulgaria, known for its clean air, pottery tradition and proximity to the Kom peak. The church is dedicated to St George the Great Martyr, deeply venerated in the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition.

Like many churches in Bulgaria's mountain towns, it lives through its contemplative atmosphere: icons, lamps and the quiet of its services, in a calm urban setting. The patronal feast on St George's Day (6 May) gathers the faithful from the town and around it.

Practical: it is easily reached on foot within Berkovitsa. As an active place of worship, dress modestly and respect services and silence. Combine your visit with a walk through the old centre, the house-museum of the writer Ivan Vazov and hikes towards the Kom peak. Details about the church's date and history should be verified on site. Visitor ratings are very high (around 4.7 out of 5).
