Berkovitsa, a winter project in the making

Berkovitsa is a comfortable, picturesque mountain town in Stara Planina (the Balkan range), slowly shaping its plan for winter tourism. For now it is an honest destination with big ambitions — not a full resort but a place to visit for the nature around it, with room to grow over the next few years.

Slopes and ski area

At the heart of the plan sits a cable car planned toward Kom peak, about 16 km to the east. For the moment, the offering comes down to:

• a single piste with one lift;
• three tourist bases totalling roughly 100 beds.

On paper the ambitions reach further: pistes twice as long, with an estimated total of about 15–20 km. All these figures are approximate and tied to projects not yet built — check the real state of the lifts before planning a ski-only trip.

Winter and summer

Berkovitsa's real strength is its nature, in any season. A short distance away is [Ledenika Cave](/obiective/ledenika-cave), one of the best-known caves in northwestern Bulgaria, with striking formations. The area is laced with waterfalls and trails:

• [the Varshets Waterfall area](/obiective/waterfall-area-varshets) and [Rayski kat waterfall](/obiective/vodopad-rayski-kat) — short walks through the forest.
• [Ivanchova polyana](/obiective/ivanchova-polyana) — a ridge meadow, good for an easy hike.

Berkovitsa is also tied to the writer Ivan Vazov, who served here as a judge; the [Ivan Vazov House-Museum](/obiective/house-museum-ivan-vazov) keeps the trace of that period. In winter the draw is snow walking and views rather than intense skiing.

Getting there

From Sofia it is roughly 1.5–2 hours by car, heading northwest via Montana. The road is passable year-round but calls for care on the mountain sections in winter. Bus links from Montana and Sofia exist, though less frequently.

• Don't come to Berkovitsa for the skiing alone — the ski area is small and hinges on projects not yet finished; treat it as a nature destination.
• Ledenika Cave keeps seasonal hours and a steady low temperature; bring a jacket even in summer.
• Pair the visit with the spa town of Varshets, a few kilometres away.

Berkovitsa — high-altitude skiing in the western Balkan range

Berkovitsa is a small ski area in the western Stara Planina (Balkan) mountains, above the town of the same name, near Kom peak. It is not a developed resort but a single mountain run at relatively high altitude — a place for hiking and simple skiing rather than a large alpine destination. The offer is very limited; we say plainly that this is one descent, not a domain.

The numbers

The area has a single piste served by one lift. The altitude is surprisingly generous for the size of the place: from 1640 m at the base up to 1960 m at the top, with a vertical of about 100 m on the prepared run. Season dates are unconfirmed and need checking before you travel — at this elevation snow generally holds well through the heart of winter. There is no night skiing and no terrain park.

Practical

Access is by car from the town of Berkovitsa in north-western Bulgaria, relatively close to the border; from Romania, arriving from the west via the Vidin area is natural. Rental and instruction are modest and not guaranteed — check on site. The area appeals above all to mountain lovers who combine easy skiing with hikes towards Kom peak and a visit to Berkovitsa town and its surroundings.
