Burgas, the calm city of the south coast

Burgas is the largest city on the southern coast and the gateway to the beaches around it — most travellers pass through on the way to the resorts. It is worth stopping for its own sake, though: it keeps a steadier rhythm than the neighbouring complexes, with a long seafront and a ring of lakes that make it one of the best birdwatching spots in Bulgaria.

Much of the centre is pedestrianised, with early-twentieth-century buildings, cafés and the feel of a city that lives all year, not only in season. Burgas airport, a few kilometres out, serves the whole coast, which makes the city a natural point of arrival.

Look for fresh Black Sea fish, mussels and rapana; the local wines from the Burgas region are worth trying.

Getting there

Burgas airport is about 10 km from the centre, with bus and taxi links into town. Burgas is a rail and road hub: direct trains to Sofia and Plovdiv, buses to every coastal resort. Frequent services run from the city to Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol and Pomorie.

Tips

• Use Burgas as a base: many famous resorts are 20-40 minutes away.
• For birdwatching, go in early spring or autumn with binoculars; the lake visitor centres give current information (approximate details).
• The pedestrian centre is at its best in the evening — eat towards the port and walk through the Sea Garden.
• Check museum opening hours ahead, especially out of season.
