Veliko Tarnovo, the capital carved into rock

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1393) and remains one of the country's most striking cities by virtue of its setting alone. Its houses scramble one above another on the steep slopes above the gorge cut by the Yantra river, and every terrace opens onto a different view. This is not a beach destination but a city of history, craft and atmosphere — the best cultural counterpoint to the Bulgarian coast.

Things to do

• Tsarevets Fortress — the heart of the medieval city, raised on its own hill, with reconstructed walls, the Patriarchate at the top and an evening sound-and-light show (when scheduled; *dates approximate* — check ahead).
• Trapezitsa Fortress — the capital's second fortified hill, less visited, reachable by funicular.
• Monument to the Assen Dynasty — the concrete sword above the Yantra, one of the city's emblems.
• Monument of Mother Bulgaria and Tsar Asen I Square — landmarks in the centre.
• Greenery and views at Marno Pole Park and across the river in Sveta Gora Park.

History and old town

The spine of the old town is Samovodska Charshia, a revived craft bazaar with potters, blacksmiths and weavers — the best place to see the urban tradition of the Bulgarian National Revival. From here the narrow lanes drop toward the Yantra, lined with the stacked, overhanging houses typical of the master builder Kolyo Ficheto.

About 4 km away lies Arbanasi, a village known for its fortress-like houses and painted churches (the Church of the Nativity has remarkable frescoes) — easily added to a visit by taxi or car.

Where to stay

The old town has many guest houses and small hotels, several with terraces over the gorge — the finest views face Tsarevets and the ravine. *Details approximate:* staying in the historic quarter is atmospheric but involves many steps and limited car access; if you want convenience, pick the area near the newer centre. Getting there

Veliko Tarnovo sits in north-central Bulgaria, on the route between Bucharest and the coast. By car it is roughly 3 hours from the border at Ruse and easy to fold into a trip to the Balkan range or the sea. Trains and buses also run from Sofia and Burgas; the main station is below the town, so factor in a taxi up to the old town.

Tips

• Book a room with a view of Tsarevets or the gorge — it is worth every lev.
• Wear good shoes; the city is all slopes and stairs.
• Catch the Tsarevets sound-and-light show if it is scheduled on your evening.
• Set aside a half day for Arbanasi — it complements the fortress perfectly.
• Ideal to pair with the coast: it is the natural cultural stop on the way to or from the sea.
