Tsigov Chark

Barely known, in the western Rhodopes beside Lake Batak — a destination for winter and summer alike.

About Tsigov Chark

Tsigov Chark is the kind of place you stumble upon rather than read about in guidebooks. It sits in the western Rhodope Mountains, about 8 km from the town of Batak and roughly 24 km east of Velingrad (approximate), right beside the man-made Lake Batak. With an average altitude somewhere around 900–1,100 m, it is a small resort of forest and water that works in both seasons.

Slopes and ski area

The ski area is modest in size, and that is exactly what makes it right for beginners and families.

  • The new piste is built for skiing and snowboarding without big-resort pressure.
  • The terrain is gentle, ideal for first lessons and for children.
  • The season depends heavily on natural snow and conditions — check the piste before you travel (approximate).

For a larger domain, Pamporovo and Chepelare are a few hours away, but the appeal here is different: quiet and a lake.

Winter and summer

In summer, the shore of Lake Batak turns into a tent camp, a fishing spot and a launch point for boat outings. In winter, it is a cabin retreat among snow and conifer forest.

Where to stay

The offering is dominated by spa resorts and lakeside villas:

Getting there

Access runs through Batak and Velingrad; the nearest large city for connections is Pazardzhik to the north (approximate). The road to the lake is easy in normal winter conditions, but forest and altitude call for care in snowfall.

Tips

  • Think of it as a quiet destination, not a large ski resort — you come here for the lake and the forest.
  • In summer, book camping spots early on busy weekends.
  • Pair it with the western Rhodope caves for a varied stay.

Ski area

Tsigov Chark

Tsigov Chark is a small, family-friendly ski centre in the Rhodope Mountains, near the Batak reservoir. It is a weekend destination for locals and for visitors staying in the area rather than a large resort. The feel is laid-back, ideal for first steps on skis and for children.

The ski area The slopes are short, totalling about 0.8 km, with a vertical drop of roughly 110 m, between a base at 1120 m and a top at 1230 m. Three lifts serve the area. This is terrain for beginners and families, not for advanced skiers seeking long or demanding runs. There is no night skiing and no snow park.

Practical The season runs roughly from December to March, depending on snow; at this relatively low altitude conditions can vary, and January–February remain the most reliable months. The Batak area offers lodging and restaurants, and the scenery of the lake and pine forests is appealing outside the season too. Check in advance which rental services and ski school operate in season. It is a good choice for a short, unpretentious outing in the heart of the Rhodopes.
