Sozopol

An old fishing and artists' town on the south coast, rooted in the Greek colony of Apollonia, its timber houses leaning over the sea.

About Sozopol

Sozopol, the port that never rushed

Sozopol is the oldest town on the Bulgarian coast, built on the site of the Greek colony of Apollonia Pontica, founded in the 6th century BC. You can still feel it: the old-town peninsula is a tight cluster of National Revival timber houses, their upper floors leaning out over stone lanes, workshops, galleries and vine-shaded yards. Unlike the satellite resorts around it, Sozopol has stayed a town of fishermen and artists, with a real community behind the façades.

Things to do

  • Wander the old town on the peninsula with no map — it is small, and getting lost is the point.
  • See what the sea gave up from the graves at the Sozopol Archaeological Museum, one of the more serious collections on the coast.
  • Climb the reconstructed Southern Fortress Wall and Tower for context and a view.
  • Take a short trip to the Castle of Ravadinovo, a modern fantasy build a few kilometres inland — knowingly kitsch, but great for photos.
  • Catch the sunset at Cape Agalina or pass through the Main Square as the terraces light up.

In summer the town hosts the Apollonia arts festival (usually late August–early September; *dates approximate* — check the year's programme).

Beaches

Sozopol has a beach right in town: Sozopol Central Beach, below the old town — convenient but crowded at peak. For wider sand and fewer people, move to Harmanite Beach in the newer part of town. Both mix paid sun-lounger sections with free stretches.

Where to stay

Staying inside the old town is atmospheric, but car access is limited; check parking before you book.

Where to eat

Fresh fish and grill, mostly along the old-town waterfront:

Getting there

Sozopol is about 35 km south of Burgas, the nearest airport city. From Burgas there are frequent buses in season (roughly 40–50 minutes) and taxis. By car, it is a comfortable base for exploring the southern coast toward Primorsko and the Ropotamo reserve.

Tips

  • Stay at least one night to catch the old town in the evening, once the day trips leave.
  • Wear comfortable shoes — the peninsula's paving is lovely but uneven.
  • In July–August book well ahead; this is one of the most sought-after spots on the coast.
  • Pair it with a day at Ravadinovo or the Ropotamo reserve for variety.
