Panichishte
In the Rila Mountains, next to the spa town of Sapareva Banya: a sports centre with slopes for all ages.
About Panichishte
Panichishte, gateway to the Seven Rila Lakes
Few people come to Panichishte for the skiing alone. Set in the Rila Mountains beside the spa town of Sapareva Banya and not far from Dupnitsa, the resort is more a launch point than a destination in itself — the threshold to one of the most photographed mountain routes in the Balkans, the Seven Rila Lakes. That gives it a distinct rhythm: quiet and easy-going in winter, a hikers' base camp in summer.
Slopes and ski area
The ski area is small and honest — right for beginners and families rather than anyone chasing serious vertical. The two main runs:
- Bekyara — roughly 470 m, served by a tow rope handling about 280 people an hour.
- Ajdena — around 400 m, some 250 people an hour, with the children's "Baby Ski Run" alongside.
Below the Dry Lake training area a biathlon course is planned, a sign the resort intends to grow beyond recreational skiing. Figures for run length and lift capacity are approximate and can shift season to season; check the state of the lifts before you set out.
Winter and summer
Summer is the real headliner. From Panichishte you climb toward [Kirilova Polyana](/obiective/kirilova-polyana-meadow), a wide-open alpine meadow, and to the local waterfalls — [Goritsa Waterfall](/obiective/ovcharenski-waterfall-goritsa) and the [Goritsa eco-trail](/obiective/ecopath-goritsa-waterfall), both reachable without technical skill. The headline draw is the chairlift up to the Seven Rila Lakes plateau: from there, a loop of a few hours links the glacial lakes, each with its own shape and name. For families, the [swing with a view at Madzhare](/obiective/madjare-s-hug-swing-with-a-view) and the [Zornitsa nature trail](/obiective/didakticheska-ekopateka-zornitsa-madzhare) make easy stops.
Where to stay
Lodging clusters in the resort itself and along the road up from Sapareva Banya:
- [Hotel Panorama](/cazare/hotel-panorama) — a classic, with valley views.
- [103 Alpine Hotel](/cazare/103-alpine-hotel) and [103 View Park Hotel](/cazare/103-view-park-hotel) — handy for the chairlift.
- [Hotel Bendida](/cazare/hotel-bendida) — a solid mid-range pick for families.
If you want thermal baths too, pair the trip with Sapareva Banya, a few kilometres downhill.
Where to eat
The cooking is mountain fare without fuss: [Restorant Panichishte](/restaurante/restorant-panichishte) and the [Seven Rila Lakes](/restaurante/restaurant-seven-rila-lakes) restaurant serve Bulgarian mountain dishes, while [Valyavitsa](/restaurante/valyavitsa) is a good stop after a hike.
Getting there
From Sofia it is roughly 1.5–2 hours by car — the motorway toward Dupnitsa, then the road to Sapareva Banya and up to Panichishte. In winter the final stretch may call for winter tyres or chains. Public transport exists but runs infrequently; your own car is by far the easiest option.
Tips
- The chairlift to the Seven Rila Lakes has limited hours and capacity; summer weekends bring queues — start early.
- Weather at altitude turns fast; pack a waterproof jacket even in July.
- Book accommodation ahead in the warm season — Panichishte is small and fills quickly.
