Aheloy, the coast without the crush

Aheloy is a quiet little coastal town, set at a river mouth between Pomorie and the Sunny Beach area. Far from the large complexes, it keeps a local, low-key air: more affordable prices, a gentle pace and the feeling of a place little touched by mass tourism. It suits anyone who wants the sea within reach but none of the big-resort bustle — with all the coastal action just a few kilometres away, for when you do want it.

Things to do

Aheloy is a beach base rather than a checklist of sights, and that is exactly its appeal. From here:

• Pomorie (a few kilometres north) — a lake with therapeutic mud, a spa tradition, salt pans and a salt museum; good for a half day.
• Sunny Beach / Nessebar (to the south) — clubs and water parks at Sunny Beach, while Nessebar, a UNESCO museum-town of medieval churches, is a short hop away.
• The wetlands at the river mouth are good for early-morning birdwatching (*details approximate* — respect any signage).

Beaches

The surrounding coast is generous with sand:

• Aheloy Beach — the town's own beach, relaxed and unpretentious.

Getting there

Burgas airport is about 20 km south and is the easiest gateway. By car, Aheloy sits right on the main coastal road (E87), which makes it easy to reach and a central point for day trips to Pomorie, Nessebar and Sunny Beach. In season there are local buses along the coast.

• Rent a car if you want to make the most of the central location — it saves a lot of time between sights.
• Being on the main road means good access but also peak-season traffic; pick accommodation set slightly back for quiet.
• Do your shopping in Pomorie or Sunny Beach — Aheloy is small.
• A day in Nessebar is worth it for cultural contrast to the beach downtime.
